Accounts & Sign-In
How people create an account and sign in — by password, by one-time code, or with Google, Facebook, Apple, or GitHub.
Everyone who uses your platform has an account. This page explains how people sign up, the different ways they can sign in, and what to do about a forgotten or changed password.
Creating an account
To sign up, a person provides:
- A name
- An email address and/or a phone number
- A password
Once they sign up, their account starts in pending verification — it exists, but they need to confirm their email or phone before they can sign in. See Verification.
When you create an account for someone from the admin area, it is active right away — no verification step needed. See People & roles.
Ways to sign in
People can sign in however suits them:
| Method | How it works |
|---|---|
| Password | Enter an email, username, or phone number, plus the password. |
| One-time code (OTP) | Get a short code by email or text and enter it — no password needed. |
| Social sign-in | Sign in with a Google, Facebook, Apple, or GitHub account. |
Social sign-in
Signing in with Google, Facebook, Apple, or GitHub is fast and skips passwords. A few things to know:
- The first time someone signs in this way, an account is created for them and it is active immediately.
- People can link more than one of these to the same account, so they can sign in with whichever they prefer.
- They can also unlink one later from their profile.
Account statuses
Every account is in one of these states:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pending verification | Just signed up; email or phone not confirmed yet. |
| Active | Can sign in and use the platform normally. |
| Inactive | Deactivated by an admin; cannot sign in until reactivated. |
| Suspended | Temporarily blocked; access is paused. |
| Deleted | Removed and hidden, though the record is kept for a while before final cleanup. |
Passwords
Forgot password
If someone can't remember their password:
- On the sign-in page, click Forgot password.
- Enter the email or phone on the account.
- They get a reset link (or code) and choose a new password.
Change password
To change a password while signed in:
- Go to Profile → Security (or Settings).
- Enter the current password, then the new one.
- Click Save.
The new password must follow your platform's password rules.
Someone who only ever used social sign-in may not have a password yet. They can still use Forgot password to set one, or simply keep using their Google, Facebook, Apple, or GitHub sign-in.
