Makeup & Alternative Assessments
Group a main exam with a makeup so a learner can take either one — and it counts only once toward the grade.
Sometimes you want to offer a learner a choice of two equivalent assessments — a main exam and a makeup, or two versions of the same test. Makeup grouping lets you bundle them together so a learner completes any one of them, and it counts once toward the grade. No double-counting, no manual juggling.
How it works
You group two or more interchangeable assessments into a single slot:
- A learner completes any one member of the slot to satisfy it.
- One member is the primary — it carries the grading weight in the final grade.
- The score used is from whichever assessment the learner actually took — so if they sat the makeup instead of the main exam, the makeup's score is what counts.
This means the slot is graded fairly: it never adds the scores together and never counts an assessment twice.
Example
You set a midterm exam and a midterm makeup as one slot, with the midterm as the primary:
- A learner who sits the midterm gets that score.
- A learner who missed it and sits the makeup gets the makeup score instead.
- Either way, the slot contributes one midterm grade to the final result.
Rules for a group
- A group needs at least two members.
- Exactly one member is the primary.
- Each assessment can belong to at most one group within the same offering.
Setting one up
- Decide which assessments are interchangeable (for example, a main exam and its makeup).
- Create a group and add them as members.
- Mark one of them as the primary.
- Save. The group now behaves as a single graded slot.
The primary carries the grading weight, but a learner is never penalized for taking the makeup instead — their actual score is the one that counts.
How it affects grades
Because the slot contributes a single grade, it slots cleanly into your grade calculation. Set how much that slot is worth using weighted grading.
