Notification Preferences

Let learners choose which messages they get, on which channels, and when — with a no-login link to update or unsubscribe.

Notification preferences put each learner in control of the messages they receive. They choose which channels to use, which kinds of messages they want, and when it is okay to reach them. This keeps your messaging welcome instead of annoying — and helps you stay on the right side of messaging rules.

What a learner can choose

SettingWhat it controls
ChannelsWhich ways they want to be reached — email, SMS, push, or a chat app.
Message typesWhich kinds of messages they want (see below).
Quiet hoursA daily window when they should not be messaged.
TimezoneSo quiet hours line up with their actual day.
FrequencyHow often messages arrive — immediately, a daily summary, or a weekly summary.

The three message types

Learners can opt in or out of each type separately:

  • Transactional — essential messages tied to their account and activity, like receipts, password resets, and enrollment confirmations.
  • Marketing — promotions, offers, and news about new courses.
  • Announcements — general updates you broadcast to a group.

Essential transactional messages keep people informed about their own account, so they are the messages a learner is least likely to want to switch off.

Frequency: immediate, daily, or weekly

  • Immediate — each message arrives as it happens.
  • Daily — messages are grouped into one daily summary.
  • Weekly — messages are grouped into one weekly summary.

A summary reduces interruptions for learners who prefer fewer messages.

Quiet hours and timezone

A learner can set a personal quiet window — for example, no messages between 10 pm and 7 am — and set their timezone so the window matches their real day. Learn more in Quiet hours.

What admins can do

  • View any learner's preferences.
  • Override a learner's preferences when needed — for example to make sure they receive a critical account message.

Every learner can update their preferences or unsubscribe without signing in. Messages can include a simple link that opens their preference page directly. This makes it easy to honor opt-out requests and is an important part of staying compliant. See Delivery & analytics for the unsubscribe and suppression tools.

How to find preferences

  • Learners: in their account, open Settings → Notifications.
  • Admins: in Admin → People, open a learner and view their Notification preferences.

Good to know

  • Respecting preferences protects your sender reputation — messages people want are far more likely to be delivered and opened.
  • A daily or weekly summary is a great option to offer learners who feel overwhelmed but still want to stay informed.
