Proctoring & Monitoring

Keep high-stakes quizzes honest — full-screen lock, disabled copy/paste, webcam, screen recording, tab-switch alerts, and live monitoring.

For graded exams where it matters that learners do their own work, you can turn on proctoring. These tools make it harder to cheat and let you watch attempts as they happen. Use them for high-stakes tests; leave them off for relaxed practice quizzes.

What you can turn on

ToolWhat it does
Full-screen lockThe quiz takes over the whole screen, and leaving it is flagged.
Disable copy/pasteStops learners copying questions out or pasting answers in.
WebcamCaptures the learner's camera during the attempt.
Screen recordingRecords the learner's screen during the attempt.
Tab-switch detectionFlags when a learner switches to another tab or window.

Live monitoring

While a quiz is running, you can watch attempts in real time and get violation alerts the moment something is flagged — for example, a learner leaving full-screen or switching tabs. This lets you respond during the exam, not just afterward.

Setting it up

  1. Open your quiz and go to its proctoring settings.
  2. Turn on the tools you want for this quiz.
  3. Save and publish. The settings apply to every attempt on this quiz.

Turn on only what you need. Full-screen lock and tab-switch detection are light-touch and suit most graded quizzes. Webcam and screen recording are best kept for important exams.

What the learner sees

  • The learner is told the quiz is proctored before they begin.
  • Depending on your settings, they may be asked to allow camera or screen access.
  • If they leave full-screen, switch tabs, or try a blocked action, it is flagged — and you may be alerted live.

Webcam and screen recording need the learner to grant permission in their browser, and work best on a laptop or desktop. Tell learners in advance what to expect and what device to use, so exam day goes smoothly.

Good to know

  • Combine proctoring with shuffled questions and options and a time limit for a much stronger exam. See Quiz settings.
  • Use a password and open/close window so everyone sits the exam together. See Quiz availability.
