Organizing Files
Keep your library tidy with folders — browse, rename, move, search, and delete files.
As your library grows, folders keep everything easy to find. You can browse, rename, move, search, and delete files and folders whenever you need to.
What you can do
- Create folders to group related files (for example, one folder per course).
- Browse in and out of folders.
- Rename any file or folder.
- Move files into a different folder.
- Search by name to jump straight to a file.
- Delete files and folders you no longer need.
Working with folders
Create a folder
- Go to Files & Media.
- Open the place where you want the new folder.
- Click New Folder.
- Give it a clear name and confirm.
Browse folders
Click a folder to open it and see what's inside. Use the path shown at the top to step back to a higher level.
A simple folder layout works best — for example, a folder per course, with images and handouts inside. A single view holding thousands of loose files is harder to work with.
Renaming
- Find the file or folder.
- Open its options and choose Rename.
- Type the new name and confirm.
Renaming a folder updates the location shown for everything inside it. Any place where the file is already attached keeps working — renaming does not break existing links.
Two items in the same folder cannot share the exact same name. If a rename is refused, pick a slightly different name.
Moving files
Move a file into a different folder to reorganize your library. The file keeps its name and stays attached wherever you have already used it.
Searching
Use the search box in Files & Media to find a file by name. This is the fastest way to locate something in a large library without clicking through folders.
Deleting
- Find the file or folder.
- Open its options and choose Delete.
- Confirm.
A deleted file disappears from your library. Where recovery is supported, ask your platform administrator before assuming a deleted file is gone for good.
Before deleting, check whether the file is attached somewhere — for example, on a course or website page. Removing a file that is still in use can leave a gap on that page or lesson.
Tips
- Set up your folder structure early, while the library is small.
- Use consistent names so search finds things quickly.
- Clean up test files and old versions now and then to keep the library uncluttered.
What's next
- Preview files before attaching them.
- Upload more files into your folders.
