Autocomplete

Instant suggestions that appear in the search box as people type, so they reach the right result in fewer keystrokes.

Autocomplete shows matching suggestions the moment someone starts typing. Instead of typing a whole title and pressing Enter, a learner can pick a suggestion after just a few letters — and land straight on the right page.

What it does

  • Suggests matching content as you type, updating with every keystroke.
  • Highlights the part of each suggestion that matched what was typed.
  • Shows what kind of result each suggestion is — for example, a course or a page.
  • Lets people choose a suggestion to jump straight to it, or keep typing for a full search.

How learners use it

  1. Click the search box and begin typing.
  2. After a couple of letters, a short list of suggestions appears below the box.
  3. Click a suggestion to open it, or press Enter to see the full results list instead.

The suggestions refresh smoothly as the learner types, so the list always reflects what's in the box right now.

What gets suggested

  • Suggestions are drawn from your published content only — drafts never appear as type-ahead suggestions, even for admins. To find a draft, an admin runs a full search with drafts included. See Search basics.
  • The list is kept short and free of duplicates, so it's quick to scan.

Good to know

  • Suggestions start appearing after a couple of letters, so a single keystroke doesn't fill the box with noise.
  • You can control how many suggestions appear at once in the search settings. See Trending and popular.
